Based out of New Jersey, Alex Desrivieres is an up and coming saxophonist, composer, and woodwind doubler. He has worked as a performer with the Jersey Shore cover band “The Cliffs,” on Norwegian Cruise Lines in the showband, at Dutch Wonderland amusement park, and in 2015 and 2016 was featured as a “Rising Star” at the COTA Jazz Festival.
Alex knew he would continue to be a musician when at a young age one of his heroes would inexplicably appeared and offer encouraging words. Never giving up, he continues to hone his craft and learn as if he were to live forever. It is this idea of always moving forward that led to the creation of his debut album, “May the Sun Never Set.”
Although jazz is his primary musical outlet, Alex has explored the music of video games, film, pop, and world music for inspiration. He studied music at Kean University where he graduated Cum Laude with a major in Music Performance with an emphasis in Pedagogy and a minor in Chinese Studies. He continued his musical studies getting an Artist Diploma in Oboe from Montclair State University. When working on the Norwegian Sun, a cruise ship, as a member of the Showband, Alex made it an important point to utilize any spare time to explore the many ports of call and enrich his cultural understanding. The environment led him to work with musicians from all over the world, each bringing with them something special for Alex to learn.
Alex continues to explore his musical horizons exploring new genres and sounds with his current project “Harmonic Convergence”, a group with a new philosophy of exploring and combining timbres, rhythms, harmonic devices from various styles of music from around the world.
